Reviews
I tried ABC Mouse and Hooked on Phonics and several other “highly” rated games for my kindergartner. None of them even come close to the quality, the fun, and the effectiveness of TAMTR. Save your money on the other scams and go with this.
We love this app- both kids are able to be challenged at their respective levels and learn and improve their sound association and reading. I was looking at the App Store and complete shocked this one isn’t ranked higher. It’s so great for my kids and recommend it when talking to other moms about ‘screen time’ any chance I get.
My son sort of liked this game when he was 3, but now that he is 4 he has figured out all the mini games and will happily play for a length of time! The phonetic based learning is quite effective and I appreciate it is not a subscription based model (which I would have given up with if he had used it as infrequently as when he was 3)
Just to scary
5 star rating
First of all, I want to commend this group for making a game that is not only visually appealing to my son but also educational. He has nailed the simple phonics and has only been at it for a few months but can remember them when we are practicing reading. The games are fun to play with him too. He loves being able to “build a monster” and earn rewards for his monster. He loves switching it’s outfits and characteristics when it suits him. The only 2 things I wish would change is that when a new phonics sound is being introduced, that not only the sounds the letters make are said but also the name of the letter or name of the letter pair for example “mmm” for letter “M” and “shhh” for “Sh” or but also reinforcing the name by saying something like “the letter M makes the sound ‘mmm’” and “the letters S&H together make the ‘shhh’ sound” to help with reinforcement of letter names as well as their sounds. It is better to play this game with him than to let him go on by himself because he needs that reinforcement and I’m happy to give it. The second thing would be when it’s time to read the sentences to figure out what the monster wants like “the big red boat” I wish that when he taps on the word they are read aloud to help with sight word recognition on his own. He tries to touch them to make them sound off but it just isn’t programmed that way in the game to allow that I guess. So other than those two things, it’s a wonderful game and we love the math version too!
I am not here to write a review. But to say thank to the usborne foundation and the people behind the game. My girl became a reader.
I’ve used this app with all three of my children, it’s fantastic for reinforcing what they have learned…it’s a simple format and the repetition of sounds really sticks with them!
This a wonderful app !!!I remember playing it when I was little and I loved and then I downloaded it for my little sister and she loved it. She had so much fun playing it and loved the missions we’re fun and interesting and making her monster
Too many bugs. It looked really nice but not smooth.
I love the game you guys have made for them and again thanks very much thank you Vanessa
4yo loves and that makes me glad BUT I get frustrated it never says the name of the letter. So for that, it loses a star. It would have been soooo easy for them to just say, “the sound, ‘fff’, as in the letter F” etc etc but no, it’s me having to say, “the sound ‘buh’ is the letter B”. Otherwise really cute and supportive.
As a Kindergarten teacher I just recently added this app your my reading group! All of my students are loving it!
My kindergarten students really love this game and in the beginning I felt like they were learning a lot. But now I have noticed a few of them guessing more than actually testing their skills. I wish the app was better at incentivizing accuracy, because most kids will always choose the easiest path.
We have tried several reading apps and this one is the only one my son has actually ASKED to play. It’s fun and engaging while also reinforcing key reading sounds and skills he is learning at school. It’s a good tool when he gets tired of “homework”.
Me and my little sister have so much fun learning and this is good for her because she is in preschool and she is a level one but we are going to work on that so yeah but I also love this game because I tried getting more games like this but they all cost money and this is the only one I love because I played it and I am the oldest out of all my siblings and I still play it so everyone should download this app
I’m so impressed with how this free app teaches vowel combinations to my rising first grader!
My 3 kids have loved learning on Teach Your Monster to Read. My five year old chooses it often for tablet time.
I love this app! My son enjoys playing it too and I love hearing him learn by repeating the word sounds. Highly recommend this app! Worth every penny.
The mechanics and content of this app are very good but I can’t use it for my autistic child. He has both echoic & screaming stereotypy. When he does well the game screams with joy. He echos the scream. Which cascades into endless screaming. Other learning apps use Woo-Hoo! Or EEEE OOOH! This one screams.
