Reviews
I really want to like this app but there are any issues with going to a webpage where videos on the webpage will just keep trying to open full screen and I can’t find a setting to actually disable these features.
Nice looking app, and I like the minimalist styling, but found it took too long to load articles, and I somehow often ended up with the author image at the top instead of the article image. Also, missed the ability to filter articles out based on keyword, author, etc.
Just a really beautiful RSS reader. You can tell that the developer put a lot of thought and effort into creating this app. It might not be for everyone, but if you’re on the fence, I’d encourage you to give it a try.
Honestly I love everything about this very easy, very clean, nice on the eyes. Just wish it had some sort of fading or soothing effect when sending articles to the current them just being gone is a bit jarring to me. Maybe even make it a toggle option so people who prefer it how it is now can choose to keep it that way. Either way good stuff
I had two main issues with RSS readers: the “unread” count inflicts psychological damage, and many RSS readers require users to rent the software platform. Current solves both of these problems. The next big step will be the ability to mute words and phrases in titles. My other source of news is Bluesky, and I very much adore being able to subscribe to a news source but then use muted words to refine that news source even further, vastly improving the signal/noise ratio in some cases.
The app is visually and structurally very well designed. I paid for the app and very happy to support developers producing high quality apps like this one. However, the reader is missing a key feature that sadly keeps me from switching over from my current RSS reader, Feedly. Although the app supports different “Currents” (categories in Feedly speak) each current has to be viewed separately via the menu bar. Feedly has a great feature which provides a Today view option that displays the 6-7 of the most recent posts from each category (or skips a category if there are none) so I can scroll down and see just a handful of articles from each category. Feels much calmer and more organized and less chaotic than a stream of random, unrelated topics. Also, once I scroll past an article it’s marked as read so I don’t have to constantly remove articles from my feed manually. And after I get through last category, the feed is done, with a big checkmark and some basic stats, which makes me feel like I accomplished something even when I really haven’t.
I like the idea of this app, but it’s missing some things that I need to switch. I currently use Reeder on Mac/iOS. 1. Keyboard scrolling for article content (page up/down do nothing - only arrow keys work) 2. Integrated browser. Most of my feeds are truncated and require opening the browser. The integrated browser in Reeder really makes things a lot smoother.
It’s clear the author put a lot of thought and effort into making a well designed app.
The concept is great but usability is really tough right now. Suggestions: make adding sources to a current way more seamless and usable. Fix the many many glitches. Eg, renaming a source works about 30% of the time. Disappointed I spent $10 on something that feels very alpha. Maybe beta. That being said I am rooting for this app and hope it gets better because the concept is great. For now I’ll sadly go back to my original rss Feed because it’s been extremely annoying to set up.
It’s a me issue, but the unread number in my RSS readers always made me feel like I wasn’t “completing” something. Current focusing on nothing but the reading and throwing out unread counts while making the reading experience nice and clean really clicked with me. Being able to mark sources as specific content, like web comics, and have them formatted to better fit the content. Overall very happy with it and looking forward to future improvements.
2026-03-12: The latest update has fixed the long delay every time I open the app. Original: I hope you like sitting around waiting to be able to interact with the app for two to three minutes every time you open this app. Frequently, when opening the app, it will also crash to the home screen. I just want to read a couple of articles when I have a little bit of free time, but this app discourages that.
Bought this because it looks like a nice reader but very surprised to see that there isn’t yet Feedly support which I think of as the gold standard sync service.
EDIT. Wow, all the things keeping me from using this as my daily reader have been adjusted. That’s actually amazing. This has my full support, and thank you for reviewing feedback! This is a great RSS reader, and I appreciate the lack of a monthly or yearly subscription model. I read both posts the developer wrote introducing this app and its philosophy. It’s highly customizable and extremely beautiful. The only thing is that the “fetch full feed” feature doesn’t seem to work for most sites in my feed that need it, and I wish triggering that was either automatic or from a swipe/pull down gesture like Inoreader. Additionally, more swipe gestures in general to navigate would be nice, and maybe a browser shortcut to quickly save articles to the app like some other readers do. That’s just my two cents, good work on this one!
I like the concept of this app but it insists on adding “From Current” as a source in my feed. No matter how many times I delete it, it always comes back. It also has lots of minor annoyances like every single time you ‘release’ an article there is an ‘undo’ pop up. There are also frequent suggestions that are meant to be helpful like suggesting that I prioritize or deprioritize sources based on how often I seem to open things. Overall I wish this app would just leave me alone and let me read things.
Really great design on the app. Reminds me of the old River of news app from a while back. Looking for the ability to have the app mark an article as read while scrolling through the article list.
I guess for a long time, the whole RSS mantra tired me out. I would get some new app and add in an OPML file and watch the app dutifully download thousands of subscription items. It seemed like no matter what I could only really look at the “today” menu. When I went backwards, I was faced with thousands of things. I wanted something different. No counts, no feeling of frustration with the reading. Enter Current Reader. I use the app on my Mac and iPhone. With the latest updates, I’m really enjoying the experience of losing the counts and whatever status they all had. There are things still being built and issues being fixed and that’s the other good thing with this. I can just watch as the app evolves. Right now though, for me and how I have worked on defining my use case, it works well. Thanks Terry. Loving the app.
Since the 2000’s, I’ve been practicing the early morning ritual of plowing through my RSS feed. Having had thousands of interactions with (the very good!) NetNewsWire, it took three or four days before Current Reader began to feel familiar and natural. It was well worth getting used to. Current really is a calmer and more beautiful way to absorb the daily deluge of information flowing in via RSS. Highly recommended +++
It's buggy, it's new, but I think fundamentally it's like the most stressful screen of NetNewsWire's Today or All Unread, with no simple way to get at what you want. Fading out things you ignore is fine except you have to stare at them until they go away or interact with them. Releasing things is the same as hiding read, except literally more effort to find the inconvenient button at the top or double swipe up from the very bottom to trigger the only convenient button. I regret this purchase despite being hopeful for something new.
I’m really interested in the concept, but it needs some polish on the first run setup and reading experience. Moving from another reader, the first run pulls in lots of old articles and you have to wait for the to fade, which required me to mark the feeds and wait a couple days. That’s going to lose some people. Most readers—Kindle is one example—allow you to choose your typefaces, line density, etc. I immediately missed my settings and haven’t been able to overcome that to switch. I’ll check back for updates.
A core function of a good RSS reader is its ability to fetch your feeds and this app is struggling to do that.
